History of the Girl Scout Council of The Apalachee Bend
The Girl Scout Council of the Apalachee Bend was originally
founded in 1918, as the Leon County Council. At that time, there
were only 4 troops in Leon County. In 1922, the Leon County Council
became the 6th recognized council in the state of Florida, and until
1932 the Girl Scout Program was run solely by volunteers.
On, January 29, 1957, the Leon County Girl Scout Association merged
with the Girl Scout Council of the Apalachee Bend and became a 7
county council. In 1965 the Bay County Council merged with the GSCAB
forming a 15 county council which was now known as the Girl Scout
Council of the Apalachee Bend.
The first summer camp was held in the 1930’s at Lake Bradford in
Tallahassee, and Girl Scout founder, Juliette Low, was able to visit
the Lake Bradford camp sites. The Lake Bradford Camp is now the
Florida State University Reservation. In 1972 the first day camps
were held at Camp for All Seasons, and the first summer resident
camp was held in 1974.
The Council properties included 2 offices; the Tallahassee office
which was built in 1981 to serve as the council headquarters; and
the office in Panama City which was acquired in 2008.
